The Writer’s Journey: A Path of Creativity and Challenge
The journey of a writer is often as captivating as the stories they pen. In the constantly evolving landscape of publishing and storytelling, the paths we choose can profoundly impact our creative process and career. Today, I want to share a piece of my journey, one that has taught me invaluable lessons about innovation, creativity, and setting goals so you too can navigate the tides of writing and innovation.
Embracing Unconventionality in Storytelling
A few years ago, I embarked on an ambitious project: writing a YA fantasy saga. Instead of the traditional route of writing and publishing each book sequentially, I chose to write the entire story as one cohesive project. This approach, unconventional as it was, opened doors to creativity and efficiency that I hadn’t experienced before. Scenes for the fourth book flowed as freely as those for the first, interweaving a rich tapestry of narrative that felt unrestricted and expansive.
Balancing Writing and Innovation
However, this journey wasn’t without its challenges. As the publishing world continued to evolve, introducing innovative ways to market and publish books—from interactive eBooks to special illustrated editions—I found myself yearning to explore these avenues for myself, not just on behalf of my clients. The longing to participate in this new wave of publishing innovation contrasted sharply with my commitment to my saga, creating a dichotomy of desires.
Wishes vs. Goals: Defining the Path Forward
This experience led to a crucial realization: the importance of differentiating wishes from actionable goals. While wishes are often ephemeral and idealistic, goals are concrete and attainable. Recognizing this difference is essential, especially for creatives navigating an industry as dynamic as publishing.
Strategizing for Success: Identifying Clear Objectives
Upon reflection, I understood that my overarching mega goal of publishing many books actually comprised two distinct objectives. The first was to complete and publish my YA fantasy saga. The second, to experiment with the latest publishing innovations in a standalone book. Identifying these separate goals allowed me to strategize effectively and set realistic milestones for each.
Advice for Fellow Writers: From Wishes to Achievable Goals
To my fellow writers, especially those feeling overwhelmed by the rapid changes in our field, I urge you to examine your wishes. Consider what actionable goals might be hidden within them. Breaking down these goals into achievable milestones can transform the way you approach your writing and your career.
Riding the Waves of Writing and Innovation
The landscape of writing and publishing is as vast and changing as the ocean. Missing a wave of innovation doesn’t spell doom; it’s a chance to prepare for the next. Embrace this ebb and flow. Remember: the best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, the next best time is today.
